What is a vent stack?

A vent stack is a vertical pipe that runs through your home's roof to allow sewer gases to escape outdoors and to equalize air pressure inside the drainage system. Every fixture in your home, from sinks to toilets, has a water trap (the U-shaped section of pipe that holds standing water). That standing water creates a seal that blocks sewer gases from backing up into your living spaces. However, if the drainage system loses air pressure as water flows out, the trap can be siphoned dry, breaking that seal and allowing gases and odors to seep into the building.

The vent stack prevents this by allowing air to enter the drain lines as water flows downward. This maintains proper pressure balance throughout the system. Without adequate venting, you may notice slow drains, gurgling sounds, or foul odors in bathrooms and kitchens. Building codes require vent stacks for all drainage systems, and they must be sized and pitched correctly to function properly. If your home has recurring drain problems or persistent sewer smells, a blocked or undersized vent stack may be the culprit.
